Its functional texture comes from molding a defined peel-ply cloth texture into the resin-rich paddle surface during curing rather than spraying abrasive particles onto a finished face. 1. Peel Ply (Cloth-Texture) Matte Finish (Peel Ply): What It Is and How the Texture Works

Peel Ply is a Surface Finish, not a Surface Material. T700 carbon fiber, fiberglass, aramid fiber, and other face materials describe what the outer composite layer is made from. Peel Ply describes how the final functional texture is formed on that face.

A useful way to picture the process is a wax-seal stamp. The peel-ply fabric acts like a stamp with a defined raised-and-recessed pattern, while the resin-rich paddle face behaves like sealing wax. During hot pressing, the fabric is placed against the face and pressed into the resin under heat and pressure. After curing, the fabric is peeled away, leaving the corresponding raised-and-recessed cloth-texture pattern on the paddle surface.

This is why Peel Ply is formed during hot pressing rather than added later as a post-process finish for Cold-Pressed Cutting paddles. Materials, resin behavior, pressure, curing, fabric placement, and release still need to be controlled, but the primary functional texture is created as part of the cured surface.

Is Peel Ply the Same as a “Raw Carbon Fiber” Surface?

No. Raw Carbon Fiber and Peel Ply describe two different parts of a paddle specification. Raw Carbon Fiber generally refers to the carbon-fiber face material or the way that face is marketed, while Peel Ply (Cloth-Texture) Matte Finish (Peel Ply) describes how the functional surface texture is created during hot-press curing.

Many carbon-fiber paddles marketed as “raw carbon fiber” use a Peel Ply texture, which is why the two terms are often associated with each other. However, a paddle being described as “raw carbon fiber” does not by itself confirm that its surface texture was created with Peel Ply.

For OEM/ODM specification, WERiDON separates them clearly: T700 Carbon Fiber, for example, is the Surface Material; Peel Ply is the Surface Finish.

Peel Ply's molded cloth texture generally retains its useful surface character better than Traditional Spray Grit, where the functional texture relies on a surface-applied grit coating. This makes Peel Ply a strong option for Thermoformed performance programs that want durable surface interaction without making maximum friction the only target.

3. Why Production Consistency Is a Major Advantage

The same “stamp” principle explains Peel Ply's repeatability: the peel-ply fabric itself can be manufactured with a standardized cloth texture. Once that texture is controlled, each paddle starts from the same defined texture-transfer source instead of recreating the functional texture independently through a dynamic spray pattern.

Peel-ply fabrics are available in different weave constructions, including coarser and finer textures, and the fabric structure directly influences the pattern transferred to the cured composite surface. This manufacturing principle is the basis for WERiDON's Coarse Grit Peel Ply and Fine Grit Peel Ply options: the texture comes from a defined fabric pattern rather than from manually created roughness.

Because that texture-transfer source is standardized, Peel Ply provides a strong foundation for repeatable surface texture across production units and batches. WERiDON uses the approved sample as the production reference so the finished surface can be matched consistently during mass production.

4. Coarse Grit Peel Ply vs Fine Grit Peel Ply

WERiDON's standard Peel Ply options are Coarse Grit Peel Ply and Fine Grit Peel Ply.

In these names, Coarse Grit and Fine Grit describe the transferred texture grade. They do not mean that abrasive grit particles are sprayed onto or added to the paddle face; the functional texture still comes from the peel-ply cloth pattern molded into the cured surface.

  • Coarse Grit Peel Ply: WERiDON's default standard option for most projects. It provides a more pronounced molded texture and is the common starting point when the project wants stronger surface interaction.
  • Fine Grit Peel Ply: a finer texture direction for players or brands that prioritize a cleaner, more direct ball-contact feel. Some prefer this more natural contact feedback and are willing to accept slightly less spin potential in exchange for that feel.

Coarse Grit Peel Ply does not automatically mean better. The right choice depends on the complete paddle configuration and the intended balance between playing feel and surface interaction.

5. OEM/ODM Sampling and Production Planning

During sampling, the useful checkpoints are the approved Coarse Grit Peel Ply or Fine Grit Peel Ply option, appearance, playing response, retained surface behavior where durability matters, and whether the production surface continues to match the approved reference. When comparing Peel Ply with another finish, keeping the main paddle platform similar makes the surface difference easier to judge.

Peel Ply is normally paired with partial-graphic or cut-out artwork. When unrestricted full-face graphics are the primary design requirement, Traditional Spray Grit is usually the more practical Surface Finish direction.

6. WERiDON Production Control

For an approved Peel Ply program, WERiDON records the selected Coarse Grit or Fine Grit Peel Ply texture grade, peel-ply cloth specification, placement direction, resin and curing requirements, finished appearance, and surface-texture reference. The approved sample is retained as the production reference, and mass-production surfaces are checked for transferred-texture consistency, appearance, and overall batch repeatability.

Standard paddle programs generally start at 50 pcs per design. Final MOQ is confirmed with the quotation because construction, artwork, accessories, and any non-standard surface-development requirements can change the production plan.

7. When Peel Ply Is the Right Surface Finish

Peel Ply is a strong choice when an OEM/ODM paddle program values a balanced combination of friction, durability, and production consistency. It is particularly relevant for Thermoformed programs that want a durable molded cloth texture that can be reproduced consistently in bulk production.

Not the best fit when: the project requires Cold-Pressed Cutting construction or unrestricted full-face artwork coverage as a non-negotiable design requirement.

If the project prioritizes maximum wear resistance within a grit-infused system, Ceramic Grit is the stronger durability-led comparison; if it prioritizes WERiDON's highest-friction direction, Silicon Carbide Grit should be evaluated separately.

A. Is Peel Ply the same as a sprayed grit surface?

No. Peel Ply creates its primary functional texture by molding a cloth texture into the paddle surface during curing. Traditional Spray Grit creates texture through a surface-applied grit coating.
